He was born January 26, 1845 to Alexander and Caroline Harrison Barber near Campbell Hill, formerly Bradley Trading Post. He was married to Mary Narcissus Higgerson in 1866. They had four children: Henry Alexander, William Harvey, Eliza Ann, and Maria Adeline.

He died on February 25, 1876 and is buried in the Looney Springs Cemetery in Campbell Hill.
