Nicholas Brown served as a Private with Company A, 5th Cavalry. He was on the Illinois Honor Roll (not sure what this means unless it was a special honor for serving in the war or something special he did.)

He was born Aug. 28, 1839 in Fairfield County, Ohio and died January 2, 1877 and is buried in Brushcreek Cemetery in Neoga, Illinois.

His parents were Edward Brown and Emmira Owings and he was married to Grayzell Swinehart. He had five children: James, William, Charles, George and Raymond. George is my great-grandfather.

According to the General Affidavit from his pension records it states "I knew Nicholas Brown from the time he came home from the army, that is from the time he was discharged until his death, and that when he arrived home he was suffering from or with chronic diarrhea and continued to be troubled with said diseases more or less until his death. I am fully satisfied that he lost his health while in the U.S. Service he was well and hearty when he went into the service and was never sound and healthy after his discharge. I am a brother of Nicholas Brown and visited him while in the army at Springfield, Ill and Helena, Ark and at Vicksburg, Miss. He had the measles at Springfield, Ill. Diarrhea and fever at Helena, Ark. and Loung (sp ??) fever or phenumonia and diarrhea at Vicksbury, Miss."

It is stated as cause of death due to chronic diarrhea.
