Private John O. Darmer had a history of being a prankster. He is mentioned in the 115th ILL History, published in 1900, on page 126:

The unit is on Snodgrass Hill ready for the reb charge and the following comment was made: "It was certainly a serious moment, but there never was a time so serious as to prevent John Darmer of Co. E having a little fun. While his comrades were trying to rest, he was making grimaces to show how "scared" he was."
