Henry A. Doty Jr. was born to parents Henry A. Doty Sr. and Elizabeth Livenger in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania on September 26, 1837.

The family moved to Ohio and later to Illinois. He was a carpenter working with his father, Henry A. Doty, before volunteering to join the 104th Illinois Infantry.

He was First Sergeant of Company E of the Illinois 104th until he was captured by Confederates in the Battle of Hartsville, Tennessee on December 7, 1862. Both Henry and His brother, Captain John S. H. Doty, were paroled. The Confederates had taken Henry's overcoat and boots before marching him from Hartsville to Murphysboro, Tennessee (Source: Henry A. Doty's Civil War pension files). Henry became seriously ill and received a medical discharge He died July 6, 1899 in Bloomington, Illinois having lived a long life as a builder and father of 5 children. His second wife, Effie M. Doty (Sackett) received his Civil War pension until her death on June 8, 1952.
