Drury Allen Jones was born 13 September 1837 in Williamson County Illinois. His father was John Jones a farmer from North Carolina. His mother was Keturah Mosely of Tennessee. Her father's name was Drury Allen Mosely.

D.A. was the second of six children. He had an older sister Lena, younger brothers John, Jonathan, Levi, and a sister Sarah. He grew up in Williamson County.

At the age of 21 he married Martha Ann Stovall of Kentucky. They were married on 18 November 1858 in Washington County Illinois. She was 15 years old at the time of the marriage. They lived in Williamson County where they had two children.

On 24 October 1861 D.A. joined the Illinois 49th Regiment, Company F, commanded by John A. Logan. In December of 1861 D.A. contracted measles and was treated at the regimental hospital at Camp Butler Illinois. The illness resulted in a catarrh of the head, a disease of the throat and bronchitis. After recovery, D.A. rejoined his unit and took part in such military actions Fort Donnelson in Tennessee, Pittsburgh Landing (where he was listed as missing in action), and the Oxford Expedition in Mississippi. On 20 December 1862 he was at Hollow (Holly) Springs Mississippi. While participating in the Red River Campaign he was involved in 41 consecutive days of fighting. D.A. was also part of the Union forces that chased Confederate General Sterling Price on his raid into Missouri.

With three years served D.A. was mustered out with his company on 9 January 1865 at Springfield Illinois. He returned to Washington County and farmed there until March 1868.

During the time on 10 August1867 Francis Marion Jones was born. With his wife Martha Ann (24), Elihu (8), John (6) and Francis (8 months), D.A. (30) left Illinois for Kansas. (The Osage Indian Territory of Labette and Neosho counties had been opened up for settlement.) They went by wagon to St. Louis, then up the Missouri River to Kansas City by boat. From Kansas City they went south by wagon to Labette County. After the seventeen day trip they arrived in southeast Kansas in April 1868. D.A. purchased 160 acres of land in Section 14 of Montana Township. The transaction was recorded in the land office at Humboldt Kansas. Drury and Martha Ann had four additional children in Kansas. He became a successful farmer, justice of the peace, and county commissioner. He died on 25 November at age 67 at Oswego Kansas. He is buried in Oswego Cemetery.
