Thomas B. Fisher Company H, 11th Illinois Infantry

Thomas B. FISHER was born 11 July 1843 in Lycoming Twp., Pennsylvania, and grew up on the farm at Amboy, Illinois, with his family. When he was 21 years of age, he and his brother, Wilson, joined the U.S. Army to serve in the Civil War. This was the last year of the war, and the northern push down the Mississippi to Mobile was well underway. The boys saw action in the area of Spanish Fort and fort Blakely in the fall of 1864 and spent the remainder of their time on garrison duty at various places in the south. Thomas' diary and letters written to him by his family have been preserved and turned into an article submitted to the Illinois Genealogical Society Quarterly for publication. Upon his return from the war, Thomas married Stella BUCKINGHAM. Stella was reared in the area around Paw Paw, Illinois, and was a descendant of a long line of the FOWLER family. This branch of the Fowler family has been traced back to about 1060. The family genealogy has been prepared and published in the form of a very large book found in major libraries. Stella's mother, Cordelia Fowler, corresponded to her family back in Geauga County, Ohio, in the mid to late 1840's as the "western frontier" was opening. Several of these letters have been preserved and were published in the Illinois Genealogical Society Quarterly as mentioned previously. Thomas and Stella had the following children: George Thomas (b-4 Apr 1875); Howard LeRoy (b-22 Oct 1878); Edward Alexander (b-16 Feb 1873); and Infant son (b-22 Jan 1882, d-20 Feb 1882). I am the grandson of Howard LeRoy Fisher. Thomas B. died 7 Feb 1923 and is buried in Amboy. His wife died 9 Dec 1932 and is buried beside her husband. The Thomas B. Fisher farmhouse still stands near Amboy and has been honored by Illinois as a centennial historical farm.
