James Henigan/Hannagan was born on 15 March 1843 in Brasher falls, N. Y. Shortly after the family moved to LaSalle County, Illinois.

In early 1862 James enlisted in Ottawa, LaSalle County, Illinois.

During the battle of the Hatchie on Oct. 4, James was wounded in the leg. He returned to combat shortly after. On July 5, 1863 the army moved against Jackson, Mississippi, and on the 12th his Brigade was ordered to charge the rebel works. James was reported missing on July 13. In 1885, James was declared killed in action during this battle. Since he had sent his pay home, his mother Bridget was granted a mother's pension of $14 a month until her death in 1904.

James is an older brother of my great-grandmother Julia Hannagan Brannigan.
