Eli Hewitt was a private in the 125th Illinois Infantry from its formation in August 1862 until he was discharged for a promotion on 23 March 1864. At that time he received his commission as an Assistant Surgeon to the 15th U.S. Colored Troops (Infantry).

He was murdered near Nashville, Tennessee on 24 July 1864.
