Meet Private Isaac Hiner, Co I, 146th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was 18 years of age on September 6, 1864 when he enlisted. He was a farmer from Stark or Knox County and enlisted at Peoria. He was 5' 6.75" tall, had brown hair and hazel eyes. His complexion was described as dark. He died of disease (smallpox) contracted from Confederate prisoners at Camp Butler, Illinois.

His brother, Joseph C. Hiner, of the 55th Illinois Volunteer Infantry had been wounded at Shiloh fighting in Sherman's brigade and after recuperation, went on to fight with Sherman all the way through Georgia and participated in the capture of Joseph Johnson in North Carolina.

Isaac's parents, Christopher and Keturah (Schneider) Hiner, originally came from Greenwich Township, Warren County, New Jersey.
