My great-great-grandfather, Joseph Hulett was born in England about 1817. He married Agnes Ann Funk in Exeter, Illinois (Scott County) on September 8, 1842. They had six children: Mary, Alfred, Virginia, Matilda, John Walter (my great-grandfather), and Missouri. Joseph and Ann are buried in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Exeter. He was a saddle and harness maker.

Joseph Hulett served in both the Mexican War and the Civil War. In 1847, he was mustered into Company H, First Regiment of Illinois in Alton, Illinois. He served as a Private and was mustered out in 1848.

On August 13, 1862, at the age of 45 years, Joseph Hulett enlisted for three years in Company F of the 129th Infantry Regiment of Illinois Volunteers in Exeter, Illinois. He was mustered in as a Private on September 8, 1862 in Pontiac, Illinois. He was mustered out as a Sergeant in Nashville, Tennessee on May 25, 1865.

I only came into possession of this picture of Joseph Hulett last year after an aunt died in California. My sister was sent a box of old photos by the executor of her estate. I was able to identify him because the hand writing on the back identified him as "my grandfather. It was my grandmother's unmistakable hand writing. Illinois State Archives verified his military record.
