Henry Lindsey joined the 95th IL Inf Vol. Co.I August 14th 1862 in Algonquin, IL. He was only 15 years old. He was reported as an orphan but did have a brother Austin Lindsey who serve in the same unit. He was born in Ellisburgh, N.Y. on the 15th of June 1847. His date of birth and location changed since he was only 15 when he entered the service. Served with the unit until mustered out in Greenville, LA May 25, 1865. He had been wounded at Spanish Fort near Mobile, AL and placed in the Sidgwick Hospital in New Orleans on March 27, 1865. He would return to Cary, IL and marry Susan Sophronia Cary the sister of his comrade in arms John Franklin Cary.

I will include this document with the many pictures and artifacts that I will provide. He was active with the GAR and went to many Reunions through the years. He lived to 80 years old dying on 30 Dec. 1927.

Elgin Courier-News ~ ~ ~ ~ CARY CIVIL WAR VETERAN PASSES AWAY RECENTLY Cary, Jan. 16.-Henry Lindsey was born June 15.. 1847,, at Sandy Creek,, N.Y.., and departed this life at his home at Cary December 30, being 80 years., 6 months and 15 days of age. He was orphaned at an early age and came with friends to Cary as a pioneer settler. At the age of fifteen years he answered the call of his country and on August 14, 1862p he enlisted in Go.I. 95th Regiment of Ill- inois Volunteers,, under Capt. James Nish and served three years and was mustered out of service on May 31, 1865. He participated in some of the hardest fought engagements of th& rebellion, such as the siege of Vicksburg, battle of Champion Hillp the Red River campaign and the siege of Nashville. On his return from the was. he was united in marriage to Sophronia Cary and to this union two sons and one daughter were born on& son having died in ingancy. He leaves to mourn his departure his beloved wife, bliisson, William Lindsey of Cary, his daughter, Mrs. Nettie Trout of Santa Marta, United atates of Colombia., South America,, a granddaughter, Mrs. Foy.L. Mentch of Cary., two grandsons, Arthur Lindsey of Joliets Glen Lindsey of Rockford, and other relatives and a host of griends. The funeral was hold Tuesday afternoon, January 3. from the home thence to the M.E. church, Rev. Barbary officiating. Mrs. Bainbridge and Mrs. Fulde, accompanied by Mrs. B.J. Zurlinden,, sang two appropriate selections. Intennent was in the family lot inn the Cary cemetery. Among those from out of town who attended the funeral were, Mr. and Mrs. George Crabtree of at. Charles., Mr. and Mrs. George Sprague and daughter, Mrs. Harry Russell of Ravenswood., Ill.,, H. Schuyler of Judson Ind.,, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Crabtree,, Mr. and Mrs. George Lindsey., Mrs. Martha Osgood of Crystal Lake and Mrs . Sam Hiner of Waukegan.



Henry Lindsey, son of Ira Lindsey and Achsah “Axie” Sprague Bishop Evans, was born on 15 Jun 1847 in Ellisburg, Jefferson, New York, United States.   Henry was only fifteen years old when he joined the Union Army for three years sustaining a wound during battle. After he was discharged he took up residence back in Cary, Illinois as a Farmer and Laborer

The Early Years

Henry's father, Ira Lindsey died prior to the 1850 Census.   Achsah married Henry's stepfather in 1854.

In 1850, Henry age three, resided with his mother Achsah, who was the head of household, maintained the household, and also raised Jeannette (aka Lenet) and William in Ellisburg, Jefferson, New York United States

The Civil War

Henry Lindsey, age fifteen and a resident of Algonquin, Illinois enlisted in the Union Army for three years as a private on 14 Aug 1862. Henry was described as 5'4" tall, light eyes, light hair and light complexion. On 4 Sep 1862, Private Lindsey was assigned to Company I, 95th Regiment, Illinois Infantry.

On 27 Mar 1865, Private Lindsey was wounded at Spanish Fort, Alabama, United States. Private Henry Lindsey was discharged on 25 May 1865 at Greenville, Louisiana, United States.

After his discharge, Henry moved back to Cary, Illinois. Private Henry Lindsey died on 30 Dec 1927 in Cary, McHenry County, Illinois, United States and was buried in Cary Cemetery.

Postbellum

Henry married Susan Sophronia Cary on 11 Jan 1866 in McHenry, McHenry, Illinois, United States. At the time of his death in 1927, they had been married 61 years, 11 months, and 19 days. They had the following known children:William Henry Lindsey (12 Apr 1867-27 Aug 1931); Mary Garnett (Nettie) Lindsey (13 Jan 1871-1939)

By 1870, Henry age twenty-two had relocated to Illinois. Henry was the head of household, a Farmer and resided with his wife of four years, Sophronia, in Algonquin Township, McHenry, Illinois, United States. Sophronia maintained the household and raised their son, William. In addition, his brother-in-law, Daniel Cary, Farm Laborer, and his mother-in-law, Lodema Cary were also residents of the household.   Henry age thirty-one was the head of household, worked in an Ice House due to a mained hand, and resided with his wife of fourteen years, Sophronia, in Algonquin Township, McHenry, Illinois, United States in 1880. Sophronia maintained the household and raised William and Mary (aka Nettie).

As of 1900, Henry age fifty-one was the head of household, a Day Laborer, and resided with his wife of thirty-four years, Sophronia (aka Thune), in Cary, Algonquin Township, McHenry, Illinois, United States. Henry and Sophronia are empty nesters and the Census shows Sophronia has given birth to two children and two are still living in 1900.   Henry was in a pension record in 1907-1933 in United States.   Henry age sixty-five was the head of household, a Laborer, and resided with his wife of forty-four years, Sophronia, on Main Street in Algonquin Township, McHenry, Illinois, United States in 1910. Henry and Sophronia are empty nesters and the Census shows Sophronia has given birth to two children and two are still living in 1910.    By 1920, Henry (aka Henry Lindl*) age seventy-two was the head of household, and resided with his wife of fifty-four years, Sophronia (aka Sappine), in Algonquin Township, McHenry, Illinois, United States. In addition, their adult daughter, Jeannette (aka Jennett Luellen) is also a resident of the household.

Death & Burial

Private Henry Lindsey, died on Friday, 30 Dec 1927 at the age of 80 years, 4 months, and 16 days in Cary, McHenry County, Illinois, United States. Henry was orphaned at an early age and settled with friends in Cary, Illinois prior to the Civil War and as an early pioneer settler.

After the Civil War, Henry married Susan Sophronia Cary and had two boys and one girl.

Those left to mourn the loss of Henry were his wife, son William, Cary, Illinois, daughter Mary G. (Nettie) Lindsey Trout, Santa Marta, Columbia, South America, and a granddaughter Mrs. Foy Luna Mentch (Pearl Violet Lindsey), Cary, Illinois, two grandsons, Arthur Lindsey, Joliet, Illinois and Glen Lindsey, Rockford, Illinois and other relatives and friends.   Henry is interred in Cary Cemetery, Cary, McHenry County, Illinois, United States, (plot: Sec A, Block 2, Lot 41, Grave 5).

Henry's wife of 61 years died on Thursday, 29 Nov 1934 at the age of 87 years, 6 months, and 9 days n Cary, McHenry, Illinois, United States.

Research Notes

Civil War Data and obituary indicate Henry was born in Sandy Creek, New York, United States and FindAGrave indicates he was born in Ellisburg, Jefferson County, New York, United States. The bio also indicates that his date/location of birth changed after he entered the Union Army at age fifteen, DOB & Death Added information by "Chambers (#48206318) Diss-96 19:48, 7 April 2025

The obituary indicates the Lindsey's had three children, two boys and a girl. On the 1900 and 1910 census it shows that Sophronia only gave birth to two children, it appears that the child died in infancy. There is an Earl Lindsey on Find A Grave: Memorial #74791489, dates unknown but it indicates it was an infant and also buried in Cary Cemetery Diss-96 19:48, 7 April 2025
