Delos Parkle Martin

Company C, 8th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry

Delos Parkle Martin was born December 6, 1836 in Alexandria, Jefferson County, New York. Delos along with his family migrated from Jefferson County, New York to Whiteside County, Illinois about 1854. September 2, 1861 enlisted as a Private at Morrison, Whiteside County, Illinois in Company "C", 8th Illinois Calvary for a period of three years. September 18, 1861 mustered at St. Charles, Illinois. October 2, 1862 captured at Shepherdstown, Virginia. Paroled at Shepherdstown the same day. June 9, 1863 captured at Beverly Ford, Rapprehennock, Virginia. June 13, 1863 paroled at City Point, Virginia. December 31, 1863 discharged for the purpose of reenlisting. January 1, 1864 Reenlisted as a veteran at Culpepper, Virginia for a period of three years. December 5, 1864 discharged for the purpose of promotion to 1st Lieutenant, Company "C", 8th Illinois Calvary. July 17, 1865 discharged from the Union Army as a 1st Lieutenant

There is no clear record of promotions from Private to Sergeant. He had reached the grade of Sergeant prior to his capture on October 2, 1862. From his own accounts of his military experience, he stated he had been imprisoned at Libby Prison after his capture.

Delos died August 31, 1922 in Kitsap County, Washington and is buried in Kane Masonic (Pioneer, Dead Man's Island) Cemetery, Bainbridge Island, Kitsap County, Washington.
