Daniel Potter was born 11 May 1847 and died 7 May 1865 at Camp Butler, Illinois. He was the son of Hiram and Ellen (Haynes) Potter of Wayne Co, Illinois.

Daniel Potter enlisted as a private in Company C, 136th Regiment, Illinois Volunteers in Olney, Illinois on Thursday, May 19, 1864 under Captain Berry. The record says he was 18, but he was only 17. He served five months and was mustered out at springfield on 22 Oct 1864. On 15 Mar 1865, Daniel, still only 17, enlisted for another year in Company C, 18th Illinois Volunteers.

He was hospitalized at Camp Butler, Illinois with "lung fever" on 30 Apr 1865. He died on 7 May, 1865 of "smallpox."

Records indicate he was 5'7" tall with dark hair and eyes, light complexion, single and a farmer. His home was listed as Wayne County, Illinois.
