Hiram Farmer Rema

Company K, 3rd Illinois Volunteer Cavalry

Hiram Farmer Rema passed away in Lander, WY 1911. A brief description of his Civil War service follows.

Mustered in at Camp Butler, Illinois 24 Aug 1861 to Co K, 3rd Illinois Volunteer Cavary. His horse died from starvation 18 Oct 1861. He was reimbursed for the loss because the Army could not provide sufficient food for the animals. At the siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi on 23 Jun 1863, his horse was shot out from under him. The horse was beyond help and destroyed. He ws detailed with the Division Surgeon at Reg't Hospital as an ambulance driver and he stayed with this assignment through the end of his enlistment. He was mustered out at Springfield, Illinois on 5 Sep 1864.
