Served in Company B of the 37th Illinois Infantry (as a Corporal/Sergeant) from September 18, 1861-September 27, 1863. He transfered as a Sergeant to Corps d'Afrique, September 27, 1863. When the photo was taken he had risen to Captain in the 92nd U.S. Infantry.
