Charles Schriber was born around 1830 in Switzerland. In September 1861 he joined the 8th Cavalry Regiment Illinois Volunteers, Company G. On the day before Gettysburg, June 30, 1863, he appears on the Roster of Troopers present for Duty as Commissary Sergeant Charles Schriber, serving in Gambiels Brigade. Mustered out in July 1865, he married in 1867 and had seven children. He died in Chicago in 1894. His youngest child, Elizabeth Schriber (Thrall), became my grandmother.
