Samuel Shepard Company C, 123rd Illinois Volunteer Infantry

Private Samuel Shepard was a member of the 123rd Illinois Regiment of Mounted Infantry, Co C. This was Col. John T. Wilder's famous Blue Lightning Brigade. He enlisted at Mattoon in 1862. He had lived in Richland Co., Illinois 1852/53. Samuel Shepard was born 1820 and died 1926. The name was changed to Shepherd in 1865.     Submitted by Clinton Hunter
