James Marshall Stinson Company H, 56th Illinois Volunteer Infantry

Corporal James Marshall Stinson, b. 7 Feb 1846. His father died when he was five and he was farmed out to a couple of families. The second family is said to have beenquite cruel so he hid in corn shocks for two days while they served for him. Finally, the chance to escape came and he went to Shawneetown and enlisted in Company H, 56th Illinois Voluntee Infantry at the age of fifteen years, on Nov. 30, 1861. He re-enlisted as a veteran at Boyd's Station, Alabana on Dec. 31, 1863. James was in: 1863 Corinth, MS, July 4, 1863 Ficksburg, MS, No. 1863 Chattanooga, TN, May 1863 Resaca, GA. James was wounded in the stomach and cared for by the Sisters of Charity, St. Louis, MO. James attended the teachers college in Gallatin county and became the second school teacher of Gallatin Co, IL. James married Lucy W. Harvey on Dec. 24, 1871 and they had seven children in Fairfild, IL. James died June 6, 1895. Submitted by Barbara D. Truempler
