Benjamin Stout Battery G, 2nd Illinois Light Artillery

Benjamin Stout was born on September 13, 1798 in Lexington, Kentucky. Early history of the Galena, Illinois area lists Benjamin Stout as one of the early settlers of that area involved in lead mining. In 1828 Benjamin and two other miners were prospecting for lead in southern Wisconsin when they built a home and unconsciously became the 1st settlers of Lancaster, Wisconsin, the present county seat of Grant County, Wisconsin. Benjamin married Elinor Davis in Grant Co., Wisconsin on June 6, 1846. Between 1847 and 1861 they became the parents of 3 girls and 1 boy. At the age of 67 Benjamin left his family in Wisconsin and traveled to Chicago, Illinois where he enlisted in Battery G, of the 2nd Illinois Light Artillery. He was enrolled by Capt Woolbrook, mustered on Jan. 31, 1864 by Capt. Pomeroy and discharged Sept. 4, 1865 by Capt. James Hall and John Lowell. Benjamin died on August 8, 1879 and is buried in the Cudahay Cemetery, Lamont township, Lafayette Co., Wisconsin. On March 28, 1881 Elinor (Ellen) was granted a widowís civil war pension due to the death of Benjamin from disease contacted in the Civil War.
