Zachariah Walton

Company B, 65th Illinois Volunteer Infantry

Zachariah Walton was born on 11 November 1811, near Penn Yan, Ontario County, New York. He was married to Phoebe Dennis on 28 December 1832 in New Marion, Ripley County, Indiana. In 1850, they moved to Andalusia, Rock Island County, Illinois. His oldest son, Nicholas Penquite Walton, enlisted in the Army with him in February 1862. They were assigned to Co. B, 65th Illinois Vol. Infantry, and they were both captured by Stonewall Jackson and General lee in the surrender of Harper's Ferry in September 1862. Their company was paroled and sent to Annapolis, Maryland, then to Chicago, Illinois, and they remained there until April 1863. They were declared exchanged and ordered to Kentucky where they fought in several battles in eastern Tennessee and North Carolina. Both men were honorably discharged after the Civil War and receved Federal pensions due to injuries received during the war. Zachariah died on 18 March 1900 and was buried in the Andalusia cemetery. His wife died on 22 July 1904 and was also buried in the Andalusia Cemetery.
