More than 500 Union tombstones are located in Mobile's National Cemetery. Located behind the marker of an unknown soldier lies the grave of Henry B. Hussey, Color Bearer of Co. K, 76th Illinois Infantry, who was slain on April 9, 1865 while scaling the works at Ft. Blakeley. The colors were seized by Charles Goldwood who met a similar fate. The flag was then taken up by James Fleming and planted on the Confederate works.
Monument erected by the 76th Illinois Infantry on May 30, 1892 in memory of their comrades who died at the Battle of Fort Blakeley in April 1865. The monument is located at The National Cemetery in Magnolia Cemetery, Mobile, Alabama.
An eagle atop cannonball rests atop the monument. The eagle and ball are copper covered with gold leaf.
